Qutting Smoking Naturally

Anyone who tried to quit smoking knows how difficult it can be.  We all know the health risks, and we all know that kicking the habit is the biggest improvement that can be made for optimum health.  At The Owl Nest we have many customers ask us about natural ways to quit smoking.  Here are some simple and effective tips & tricks to help quit smoking:

Affirmation Samples:
I nourish my body with healthy habits.
I am happy, healthy and smoke-free.
I enjoy breathing clean and fresh air.
I now have more money in my bank account.

Say the affirmation with focused intention.  Fill your body and lungs with the clear vibration of your affirmation every time you feel a craving for a cigarette and take a moment enjoy the new experience.  Old habits die hard sometimes and it may take a while for your body to readjust to the new you.  Be gentle with yourself.

Herbs: There are several herbs that have a reputation in helping to quit smoking.

Licorice: Licorice root can help in several ways by promoting adrenal hormones which help during the withdrawal phase and is a soothing relaxant with expectorant qualities which help clear out the lungs.   Licorice root (or candy) can be chewed on as well to ward off cravings.  Licorice can be blended into a decoction, infusion or tincture.
*Do not use during pregnancy or nursing.

Mullein: Mullein is a supportive herb that is used to treat many bronchial and lung conditions such as: asthma, bronchitis, congestion, and soothes sore throats.  Mullein can be blended into an infusion and sipped during moments when comfort is needed when quitting smoking.

Oatstraw: Oatstraw is a nurturing herb for calming the nerves, lifting the spirits and relieving stress. Oatstraw can be blended into an infusion or tincture.

Peppermint:  Peppermint is used as a tonic to relieve anxiety and stress.  Chew peppermint gum or candies to stave off the need to light up.  Drinking a cup of peppermint tea is a wonderful alternative to drinking a cup of coffee which often triggers the need to smoke.  Peppermint can be blended into an infusion, lotion, or tincture.

Saint John’s Wort: Saint John’s Wort has been widely used for thousands of years and has wonderful healing possibilities.  A natural anti-depressant, Saint John’s Wort can provide relief from anxiety, headaches, irritability and tension associated from smoking secession.  Saint John’s Wort can be blended into an infusion or tincture.
*May cause fair skin irritability during prolonged sun exposure.

Thyme: Thyme is a common garden herb that is high in antiseptic qualities that treats many respiratory problems including: asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, and sore throats.  Sprinkle onto your favorite dishes to get an extra immune system boost.  Diffuse Thyme in rooms to banish the unpleasant odors that cigarettes leave behind.  Thyme can be blended into an infusion, lotion, or tincture.

Infusions:  Drink up to three cups daily.  Add 1 Tablespoon dried herb (or 2 Tablespoons fresh) for every 8 ounces of boiling water.  Cover and steep for approximately 10 minutes.  Strain.  Honey, Stevia or sugar can be added for taste.  Enjoy!

NOTE: NEVER USE HERBS AS TOBACCO SUBSTITUES!  Check with your health care provider before beginning herbal remedies.

Meditation:
Meditation is a helpful tool in helping to quit smoking naturally.  Setting aside a set time slot during your busy day promotes a positive outlet for your body, mind and spirit to focus on while you are releasing that which no longer serves a purpose for you.  Local healer Alexandra Windsong has a wonderful selection of guided meditations with a variety of themes available for purchase at The Owl Nest.

Music:
Music is incredibly healing.  Channel your new found energies into a fun and hands on activity.  Join in on our monthly third Friday Creative Sound Circle with Brandon and Chris at 7pm.  The intention of this group is to hold high healing spiritual vibrations for Mother Earth and all of Her Children.  Bring your peaceful instruments (or borrow one of ours) and join in.  Release through the drum or didgeridoo, get up and shake your booty or just chill and absorb the good vibrations.  Free!

To those who are reading this and wish to quit smoking, you CAN do it.  YOU have the POWER to make that CHANGE.  When you are ready to quit smoking remind yourself that you are a spirit having a human experience and if you should stumble along the way remember to forgive yourself and keep moving forward.  To err is human, to forgive is divine.
