Who is Mercury?

The mythological Roman God Mercury (known as Hermes in Greek) is the patron of communication and messages, escorting recently deceased souls to the Underworld, commerce, education, profit, short term travels, thoughts, and trade.

The Divine Herald of the Gods is athletic and handsome, wearing talaria, a winged petasos and carries a caduceus entwined with double serpents, and a tortoise shell lyre. Mercury is accompanied by a cock and ram, symbols of a new day dawning and fertility.

Mercury is in charge of and represents our daily activities and how we operate; airplanes, buses, cars, motorcycles and how we get around and travel, to cell phones, computers, email, faxes and how we communicate with each other and the world.

What is Mercury Retrograde?

In astrology and astronomy a ‘retrograde’ refers to a celestial body or planet appearing to move backwards. In our heliocentric universe we along with the other planets, orbit the Sun. All planet minus the Sun and Moon retrograde at different periods in their cosmic cycles. When a planet is overtaken by Earth’s orbit this is when it appears to be moving backward. Mercury Retrogrades every three months for three weeks.

What to Expect During Mercury Retrograde -

When Mercury is in retrograde we can expect communication misunderstandings, electronic devices breaking or going on the fritz; dropped cell phone calls, lost emails, and travels to be delayed, flights cancelled, or the car breaks down.

Situations that were thought to be resolved suddenly become an issue again; conversations that were thought to be handled resurface. What you thought was finished becomes revisited.

Skills of Survival: Think Re -

During the Mercury Retrograde period use your time to ‘re’: re-activate, re-acquaint, re-examine, re-finish, re-read, re-think, re-visit. Don’t hibernate or crawl under a rock, be proactive!

Use Your Time Wisely -

- It is best to avoid making agreements and signing contracts if possible as these plans are likely to fall through, instead ‘re’ your situation double check the paperwork, making sure all of the i’s have been dotted and the t’s have been crossed.

- Starting a new project is not advised, however, finishing an abandoned one is favorable.

- Use careful wording and think what you want to tell someone through before speaking to make sure you communicate yourself clearly.

*Mercury will be in retrograde from Wednesday May 6 until Saturday May 30* - effects of Mercury Retrograde can 'leak' for several days before and after the calendar dates.
